I love this book and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting an overview of the differences between Orthodoxy and other religions. It goes into some depth and I've found that the conclusions of the author about other religions that I have experience with has been quite correct. I don't know about the others.Be aware that the author writes from the position that when Orthodoxy differs from other religions it is Orthodoxy that is correct. This is to be expected since it was written by an Orthodox priest.

Great read for Orthodox Christians trying to learn about other faiths and express their own, and I'm sure a great read to others who have some interest in how Orthodoxy relates (or doesn't relate) to other faiths. Fr. Damick's points about some of the old (though some seem to be resurfacing) heresies are very sound. Don't read without reading the preface first.
This book should be a big help to me as one who converted to the Orthodox Church from the Episcopal church in 1996. I constantly run into people who haven't the faintest idea what the Orthodox Church is! Usually they assume I'm Jewish. Having information from this book to compare the differences and similarities will be just great.
As a Roman Catholic converting to Orthodoxy, looking for a means of explaining the objections of the East to the "filioque," this book was just what I was looking for. Also recommended are "The Truth What Every Roman Catholic Should Know About the Orthodox Church," by Clark Carlton and "The Mystagogy Of the Holy Spirit," by St. Photius the Great.
My recommendation for this book goes to Orthodox Christians as well as to non-Orthodox Christians.
As an Orthodox Christian, this book does an excelent job right from the begining by properly defining the terms so that there is no confusion from what Orthodoxy means to what heresy means and implies as in the first chapters it's important when going over what Roman Catholicism and Protestantism are. Though I used to be a Protestant and am very familiar with Roman Catholicism, not everyone is, especially the historical circumstances that gave birth to them with the various inovations in their traditions. So for Orthodox Christians it's great to be able to at least understand our heterodox friends and where they're coming from.
The following chapters that focus on various other non-Christian traditions has excellent tidbits to wet the appetite on what their histories are. If anything, this is the part why I've taken out 1 star just because these chapters aren't as elaborate as the ones on other Christian traditions though it's understandable as the author already had mentionned that the goal was to give an "encyclopedia level" description of them so if you want to further follow up more in depth, you can.
For non-Orthodox readers, I would recommend this book generally for the same reasons that I would for the Orthodox at least for getting a better historical context the various heterodox Christian groups and find the source of the doctorines and the reasons why they were adopted. I would have to warn Roman Catholics or Protestants/Evangelicals that some that is written may be hard to swallow and to avoid reading it if you're not open to the idea that your tradition may be heretical.
In conclusion, this book has been a great help in being able to better understand the origines of various heresies within Christendom in a clear and interesting way.
I'm Orthodox, Greek I love this book learning so much more about being Orthodox, I'll be following Fr.Andrew, on his life, of faith in the Orthodox "Way".
What I love about this book is you get a view of the forest as well as the trees. I learned about the many heterodox movements and what they all have in common- they start as movements and end up becoming institutions and then dividing; then new movements pop up and it starts all over again. The author provides many great insights and points about why these movements are misguided. It's really helps readers see the big picture of what happens when schism and personal opinion are embraced over against the rule of faith of the early church; the fruits are not good. I recommend this book!!!
This book shows how the thinking of a time period birthed ideas that created new denominations. One can really understand the process and WHY things are as they are! It truly allows one to see where the person is "coming from."
I am Orthodox, but now I understand some of the things a Pentecostal friend has said. I don't agree, but now I understand how hard it would be for him to think differently given his background. I think this will help me in many relationships to be more understanding, less likely to think someone is really strange to believe some of what they believe.
I could sit all day and discuss difference beliefs with someone. But this book gives insight into how those beliefs developed, what made people start thinking in that direction in the first place. That's information that a lot of people aren't aware of themselves and so couldn't share in a discussion. It also hows where there is a common ground.
I think anything that helps people understand each other is good. I love this book and can't say enough good about it!
